Knox Box Program
The Horsham Fire Company supports the use of the Knox Box system to enhance emergency response efficiency and property protection throughout the community. This program is designed to provide first responders with secure, immediate access to buildings during emergencies - without causing unnecessary damage or delay.
What Is a Knox Box?
A Knox Box is a secure, tamper-resistant key vault installed on the exterior of a building. It contains keys, access cards, or other critical entry tools that allow fire and EMS personnel to quickly enter a property during an emergency.
Only authorized emergency responders can access the Knox Box using a master key controlled by the fire department.
Why Install a Knox Box?
Rapid Emergency Access
During fires, medical emergencies, or alarm activations, every second matters. A Knox Box eliminates delays associated with forced entry.
Reduced Property Damage
Without a Knox Box, responders may need to force doors or break windows to gain entry. This can result in costly repairs. The Knox Box helps prevent unnecessary damage.
Enhanced Safety for Occupants and Responders
Quick access allows crews to locate and assist occupants faster while reducing risks associated with delayed entry.
24/7 Emergency Preparedness
Whether your property is occupied or vacant, a Knox Box ensures access at any time - especially important for after-hours incidents.
Who Should Consider a Knox Box?
The Horsham Fire Company strongly recommends Knox Box installation for:
- Commercial properties
- Multi-family residential buildings
- Gated communities
- Medical facilities
- Schools and daycare centers
- Houses of worship
- Industrial and warehouse facilities
Single-family homeowners may also benefit, particularly those with medical conditions, mobility limitations, or monitored alarm systems.
How the Knox Box System Works
- Property owner purchases a Knox Box directly from the authorized provider.
- The box is installed in an approved exterior location.
- Keys or access devices are secured inside the box.
- Horsham Fire Company personnel lock the box using a department-controlled master key system.
- During an emergency, responders use their master key to access the contents and enter the building safely.
Security and Control
Knox Boxes are designed with high-security features and are only accessible by authorized emergency personnel. The master keys are strictly controlled, audited, and secured by the fire department, ensuring the integrity of the system.
Community Benefits
Implementing the Knox Box program across Horsham Township improves overall emergency response capabilities by:
